Description

The Canning Arms is a public house built in the early to mid 19th century. It features English bond brickwork with squared, coursed blue lias used for the stable, all of which is painted. The building has a tiled roof and is designed in an 'L' shape, with a cross-wing on the left that extends away from the road. It is two stories high and the main block has four windows across its front.

An open, single-storey porch with timber posts set on stone bases leads to the entrance, which has a hipped, lead roof and a four-panel door located at the back on the right. To the right of the porch is a single-storey bay that projects out, with a square depth matching the porch, and a canted end featuring three equal faces, each with a 16-pane sash window and a hipped, tiled roof. To the left of the porch, there are two two-light wooden casement windows with slightly cambered rubbed brick arches, and the first floor has similar windows.

On the left gable of the cross-wing, there is a parapet leading to the gutter, with a plain brick chimney located on the ridge at the junction with the cross-wing and on the right gable. To the right, there is a single-storey wing that includes a four-pane casement window in a hipped dormer against the gable of the main block. Below this, five small windows from the 1970s are present, along with a ridge chimney at the end. Beyond the main building, there is a slightly lower stable block featuring a central boarded door with stone voussoirs to a cambered arch, and wooden casement windows with flat brick arches on either side.
