Description
The barn at Rectory Farm is a Grade II listed building dating from the early 17th century, with extensions added in the early 19th century and late 20th century. It features brick-nogged timber framing for the barn and weatherboarded framing for the lean-to, while the stable facing the road is constructed of squared, coursed stone and English-bond brickwork, topped with a tiled roof.
The barn is a three-bay structure with a single-storey lofted stable and a two-bay lean-to. The front elevation has framing three panels high to the eaves, with an angle brace corner post connecting to the wallplate. There are double boarded doors in the center, each divided into two halves. The lean-to on the left is open at the right end, and the stone rear wall of the stable is concealed by the lean-to. The right return features timber framing with curved braces connecting the main posts to the rail, along with a boarded door leading to a pitching hole below the tie beam, which has a collar above it. The upper part of the gable is weatherboarded. The lean-to is not considered of special interest.
On the left return, there is a lean-to on the right with boarded doors, and a barred window on the lower floor. The upper floor has a boarded door, both of which are topped with cambered brick arches. Inside, the barn has a cambered tie-beam supporting the trusses, with curved braces connecting to the main posts. Angled struts support the collar, and there are two pairs of purlins with curved wind-braces above the threshing floor only, along with a plank ridge. The rear wall of the barn was rebuilt in the 1970s using concrete block, but it retains some of the main timbers.
