Description
The swing bridge over Naas Harbour, located opposite the corner of Naas Lane, is an early 19th-century structure. It features a pair of laminated timber beams that support a heavy cross-plank deck. The bridge has a round bar balustrade mounted on steel T-section uprights, some of which are reinforced. It is suspended by steel rope cables that run over two decorative cast-iron posts. The bridge operates using a horizontal revolving wheel and apparatus. At the harbour end, there is a push-bar attached to a heavy steel-capped post, approximately 450mm square, along with a single railway buffer stop positioned at a low level. The total length of the bridge is about 13 meters and its width is 2.2 meters. The projecting curved abutments are made of sandstone coursed walling and include steps leading down at the swinging end, featuring very heavy block rounded nosings. Additionally, there is a receiving block with a cast iron hook for securing the bridge in an open position. This bridge exemplifies the sturdy and functional design typical of quay-side structures.
