Description
The Mottley Monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 20 meters south of the south-west corner of the tower of the Church of St. John the Baptist. It commemorates James Mottley, who died in 1780, and is made of stone. The tomb features a flat lid with a moulded edge and slightly indented ends on the long sides. The sides are framed with recesses and have quarter square bulbous balusters at the corners. The centre section of the ends is strongly carved, with the east end now unclear and the west end depicting a head. It also has a moulded plinth and includes later inscriptions dating up to the early 19th century.
