Description

The Moat features a former barn and stable, now used as a barn and store, dating from the second half of the 18th century. The structure is built with Flemish bond brickwork and has a tiled roof. The barn consists of five bays, while the stable has two bays and is two stories high.

The elevation facing the house has central boarded double doors, with a small personal door incorporated into one of the doors. Stone hinge blocks support the doors, and there is a steep segmental brick arch above. The walls on either side taper to half-brick thickness just below mid-height, with pilaster buttresses above at the divisions between the bays, except for the extreme left bay where the wall maintains its lower thickness for the full height. Each side features three slit air vents in the plinth, along with an additional slit in the thicker upper wall section. Each recessed panel contains a lancet with an ogee head, infilled with a brick grill. The gables have parapets, and there is an iron weathervane on the ridge near the left gable, which also has a similar lancet in its head.

On the right side, the lower wing has a stone plinth and a boarded door that is accessed by two steps, beneath a cambered brick arch. The top third of the wall is panelled like the barn, with similar lancets and a projecting brick impost at the springing of the head. The gable also has a parapet. Inside, there are slight internal buttresses and splayed slit air vents. The barn features tie beam trusses with collar and angle struts, two pairs of purlins, and a square ridge. The stable is lofted and has a truss similar to that of the barn, but with a plank ridge and slit air vents in the gable. The stable is slightly later than the barn. There is a timber shed built against the stable, but it is not of special interest.
