Description
The gates and gatepiers at the cemetery were built in 1863 by Jacques and Son. They are made of ashlar stone and wrought iron. The structure features double gates flanked by gatepiers, with a single gate to the right accompanied by an additional pier. The main gatepiers have a chamfered top that sits on a square plinth, with corners chamfered in two stages to create an octagonal shape. They are topped with a moulding and a truncated ogee cap.
The gates themselves have a robust main frame, with double bottom rails that include St. Andrew's crosses between the main bars. Above these, there are additional dog bars, a double centre rail with quatrefoils between the main bars, and a single top rail that features fleur-de-lys tops on the main bars. The single pedestrian gate to the right is lower than the main gates but shares similar design elements, including a single bottom rail. The adjacent pier is octagonal in shape, with a moulding at the pointed head and four serrated stages. This structure forms a group with the nearby chapels.
