Description

The Church of St Peter is an Anglican parish church designed by the architect Waller and Son. It was primarily built in 1881, incorporating some 14th-century work in the tower. The church is constructed of rubble with plain tile roofs. It features a three-stage tower at the west end of the nave, a wide south aisle, a deep north porch, and a transeptal north chapel, along with a shallow chancel. The tower is crenellated and has a squat spire, with a smaller spire on the stair vice. The windows are generally in the 14th-century 'decorated' style, and there are remains of a Norman window built into the north door.

Inside, the nave has four bays with an arch-braced truss roof. The south arcade consists of four cylindrical red granite columns with 13th-century type leaf-carved capitals. There are triple shafts in granite leading to corbels at the chancel arch, and short shafts on floriated corbels supporting the chancel roof. The church also contains a 19th-century stone pulpit, a wrought iron sanctuary rail, and tiled floors. The tower arch is fitted with 20th-century panelling. Notably, there is an ancient circular font bowl that is unlined, which is part of a group of Norman fonts in the county.

This church stands on the site of a 14th-century building, which replaced an earlier church located lower in the town. The new church constructed in 1875 by Waller and Son of Gloucester was almost completely destroyed by fire shortly after its completion but was rebuilt by Waller in 1881.
