Description
The Sloper monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 21 meters north of the west end of the chancel at the Church of St. Mary. It commemorates Thomas Sloper, who died in 1703, and is made of ashlar stone. The tomb features semi-circular ends, with the center of each side slightly projecting. The top shows weathered remains of an effigy, which may have originally been longer, and is covered by a flat lid with a moulded edge. The ends are plain, with gadrooning and moulding at ground level. The sides have a slightly sunk rectangular panel; the south side features a leaf surround to an oval center, while the north side has a plain shield at the top with drapery tied by ribbons, which are caught up at the corners and hang down the sides. The plinth is buried, and the lettering is small and neat. There is also a later inscription dedicated to a daughter on the north side.
