Description

Hartpury Mill, also known as The Mill, is an early 19th-century watermill constructed with Flemish-bond brickwork set on a squared stone base. The mill features a stone slate roof to the south and a clay tile roof to the north. It stands 2½ storeys high and consists of a single room. The entrance is located on the south side, featuring a boarded door framed in heavy timber with a cambered brick arch above, which has a heart shape formed in blue headers. The eaves are adorned with dentils, and there is a stump of a chimney located above the door. There are no other openings on this facade.

On the left side, there are two-light casement windows on both the first and second floors, each with a cambered brick arch above. Below, there is an iron-framed undershot wheel with plain wooden paddles, and the back wall of the pit has been rebuilt. The lower part of the mill wall up to the gable is made of blue/grey brick, which is likely older than the rest of the mill.

Inside, the ground floor is stone-paved and divided into three bays, each supported by two heavy timber posts. The floor level is slightly raised in the end bays. A dogleg timber stair leads to the first floor, where there is an outline of a former fireplace and flue on the wall above the entrance door. There is no stair leading to the loft, which contains four bays with cut tie-beam trusses and two pairs of butt purlins. The floor is raised in the center of the two central bays, and a plaster ceiling largely survives in the bay opposite the wheel, which is the only bay that was ever ceiled. The loft also retains a wooden wheel for hoisting grain, along with a winding drum, control lever, chain, and cord. Hartpury Mill forms a group with the nearby church, Court Barn, and Hartpury Court.
