Description

Hartpury Court is a farmhouse built in the mid-19th century. It features random rubble construction with some squared stones arranged in courses and has ashlar dressings. A later addition includes an ashlar porch and the roof is tiled. The building has an irregular 'L' shaped plan with wings and is two stories high, with part of the upper floor in the roof space.

The façade facing the road has hollow chamfered windows, with a gable on the left side. It has a plain plinth and a 3-light mullion and transom window with iron opening casements on the ground floor, and a similar 2-light window above, both topped with hoodmoulds. There is a slit window in the gable and a parapet gable with deep kneelers and a shallow projection.

On the right side, there are 2-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds on the ground floor, and a later single-storey ashlar porch in the corner that features a single light window and a square-headed door with deep hoodmoulds that drop from a string course below a crenellated parapet. Above the porch is a single-light window in a small stone gable, and a 2-light window in the corner with a lean-to roof.

The side wall of the right wing projects, featuring a 2-light mullioned sash window below and a single-light window in the gable above, similar to the other side of the porch. There is a parapet gable on the right with a 2-flue ashlar chimney that has a moulded cap and base at the junction of the wings. The left return from the first gable is blank and set back, with a stone-roofed lean-to that has a single-light window, and just beyond is the rear wall of the lean-to range parallel to the road, which also has a single-light window. A 4-flue ashlar chimney is located on the main block beyond.

The rear wall of the lean-to continues as a link to a former Roman Catholic chapel, which features a top stepped up over a 4-centred arch, with an iron gate in sunk spandrels that have blank shields. Hartpury Court was built by Cannings of Hartpury House to replace an earlier dwelling that served as a convent for nuns from France from 1794 to 1839.
