Description

The courtyard wall and railings at Hartpury House were built in 1896 by Sir Guy Dawber for William Gordon-Canning. This structure features English-bond brickwork with ashlar dressings and wrought iron. It encloses a rectangular courtyard on three sides in front of Hartpury House.

The main entrance has gates to the park opposite the house's porch, flanked by short fixed railings on either side and a decorative central feature above the main level. Square, panelled stone piers with cornices and ball finials stand on each side of the gates. A low brick wall with stone coping and a swept top supports the railings, which consist of five bays on the left and six on the right. The railings are held up by lyre-shaped stone uprights with cornices set across the wall, featuring straight top and bottom rails and decorative elements in the center of each bay, framed by vertical bars.

Tall, square brick pillars at the front corners have stone bands, cornices, and ball finials, with the last featuring a vermiculated band around the center. On the right side, two panels return to the main entrance gate, with piers at the corners that include a nib for the gates, returning with a stone console to the pier at the top. The gates are currently missing. A high, plain brick wall connects to the house, while on the left, a low brick wall forms the end of the courtyard, returning to the house and featuring two openings with low square piers, plinths, and flat stone coping with a moulded edge.
