Description
The gates and piers to Dean Hall date from 1852 as indicated by a datestone. They were constructed for N P. The gates and piers are made of thin coursed, squared red sandstone with grey ashlar quoins, and wrought iron. The arrangement includes piers flanking the carriageway, a pedestrian gate to the left, and curved wing walls. The piers are square with chamfered arises, a plain red plinth, a moulded edge to the cap, and a crenellated upper edge culminating in a pyramid top. The pedestrian gate has a cambered head with a chamfered edge and a projecting keystone. Plain, weathered coping defines the wing walls. The main gates are hung on large iron posts adorned with spear finials, featuring a sweeping top rail and a matching upward-curving brace in the bottom half, with smaller spear finials on the dog and main bars. A single pedestrian gate is a simplified version of the central two panels.
