Description
Prior's Lodge is a large detached house located on Aylburton Lodge Lane. It was built in the early 18th century and extensively modified in the late 18th century. The exterior is rendered, with the central section at the back featuring exposed rubble. Architectural details include a wood modillion cornice, a plain parapet, and full-width pediments on either side. The roof is low-pitched and hipped, covered with concrete tiles, and has stacks.
The house is a long, wide block built across the slope of the land, likely in multiple stages, and features three formal elevations along with a tripartite back elevation. It has 3½ storeys with stepped levels but maintains a continuous parapet. The front elevation includes four lunette dormers above one replacement sash window on the highest level to the left, followed by a 4-pane sash, a 3-light casement with a transom under a segmental head, and three original 12-pane sashes. Below these, there is a pair of 20th-century glazed doors, a 2-light casement, and another 12-pane sash, leading to a pair of 20th-century glazed doors approached by a stone staircase. There is also a small round-headed sash window, all situated within a 3-bay wood porch topped with a hipped slate roof, featuring three deep 18-pane sashes. At the right end, at lower ground level, there are three 12-pane sashes.
The left return has a three-windowed elevation with sashes on the first and second floors above two 2-light casements with transoms. The right return is two-windowed and also three storeys high, featuring all glazing bar sashes.
Inside, the house boasts an early 17th-century open square well stair with a plain string, twisted balusters, and a heavy handrail. There are many 18th and 19th-century panelled doors and shutters throughout. In the dining room at the west end, there is a large stone-cheeked fireplace with a very deep oak bressummer.
