Description
The New Inn is a former inn, now empty, located on the east side of High Street in West Dean. It is dated "Anno Domini 1637" above the fireplace on the ground floor gable end. The building is constructed of rubblestone with a stone slate roof and features two groups of diagonally set stone stacks. It has an 'L' shape with a two-storey porch in the southeast corner and a 19th-century stable wing to the south. The inn has two storeys and an attic in the gable.
The main front has three windows, including the porch, which are later additions, likely from the 20th century, and consist of three-light stone mullions with leaded glass and hood moulds. There are original stone mullion windows on the gable facing the street, within the porch, and at the rear, including a two-light arched window on the rear of the north wing. Inside the porch, the original entry is now blocked, and the door has been relocated to the right. The stable block is made of rubblestone with a double Roman tile roof, featuring three windows and a single brick ridge stack. There is also an additional small building in the angle at the northeast, which has a slate roof.
