Description

This is a former school, now a house, dating to circa 1638. Constructed of rubble stone with large dressed stone quoin blocks, it has an asbestos slate roof with coped verges, and stone and brick stacks. The building is shaped like a ‘T’, comprising a long single range and a smaller extension. It has two storeys and an attic window in the gable end. There are four windows in total; the first floor windows are 2-light stone mullioned, while the ground floor windows are paired casements with stone lintels. Two oak boarded doors are located at the corner of the ‘T’ shape. The right-hand gable features a vertical row of three 3-light arched stone mullioned windows with hood moulds and decorative label stops. Above a ground floor window is a coat of arms depicting the founder of the school, Edward Bell, along with a Latin inscription and the date 1638.
