Description

The Old Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with an extension added in the early 18th century and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features brick-nogged timber framing on a stone plinth and has a clay tile roof, with a random rubble lean-to extension on the right side that has a slate roof. The building consists of a single bay, gabled towards the road, and stands 2½ storeys tall, with a lean-to at the eaves on the left and a lower section on the right.

The front facade facing the road has close-studded timber framing, with a single panel high for each floor, and some nogging arranged in a herringbone pattern. There is a boarded door accessed by five stone steps, topped with a wooden Tudor arch and a 20th-century surround. To the left of the door is a three-light casement window, with weatherboarding above it. The right side has a stone lean-to and square-panel timber framing.

On the first floor, there are long braces connecting the corner posts to the bressumer, with a three-light casement window and weatherboarding above. The gable features a collar to the truss and a two-light casement window above, along with decorative bargeboards that extend down the lean-to on the left. At the center of the block behind the left lean-to is a large stone chimney base, with a single mid-20th-century brick stack replacing two diamond-set brick stacks.

The right return has a boarded door accessed by one stone step and a two-light casement window, both of which have cambered brick arches, and there are dentil eaves. The close-studded timber framing continues above the lean-to, with long braces similar to the front, and a blocked window in the center. The Old Cottage forms a group with the nearby church and Church House. The interior has not been inspected.
