Description

Red Thorn is a cottage that likely dates back to the 17th century, with later extensions. It features timber framing with brick-nogged or rendered panels and a thatched roof, while one extension has weatherboarding and a tiled roof. The cottage consists of two bays and is one room deep, standing at one and a half storeys high, with a lean-to extension on one side and a gabled end.

The entrance front facing the garden has had its ground floor framing renewed in brick between the corner posts. On the left, there is a two-light casement window, and on the right, a boarded door. The end of the lean-to on the right displays two-panel light framing. Weatherboarding is present on the tie beam of the gable, with a two-light casement window and weatherboarding over the collar.

The left return features a large lateral brick chimney with tiled offsets, and the thatched roof has been cut back to accommodate it. The right return has a low, two-panel high wall with a four-pane window on the left and a metal casement window on the right. Set back on the right is a two-light casement and a boarded door in the weatherboarded extension. The right gable has a single-pane window at the end of the lean-to extension, which is adjacent to a half single-storey gable of the weatherboarded extension. Above the ridge of the original house's gable, there is another two-light casement window, with weatherboarding over on the collar. Inside, the main beam has a chamfer, and the ceiling joists are exposed in the room at the garden end.
