Description
The Old Post Office is a Grade II listed building, originally three adjoining cottages, now converted into two. It was likely built between 1854 and 1856 by architect Lewis Vulliamy as part of the redevelopment of Westonbirt Village by Robert Stayner Holford in preparation for the construction of Westonbirt House.
The building features coursed stone construction with a stone slate roof and stone end and ridge stacks, some of which date from the 20th century. It is a single long range with rear extensions and a projecting gabled wing to the right of the center. The structure has four unevenly sized gables, including the projecting wing, and is adorned with scattered single- or two-light stone mullions that hold leaded casements, all topped with square hoodmoulds. The ground floor includes two projecting porches with steep gables, kneelers, and chamfered Tudor arches. Although it has been slightly altered, The Old Post Office is significant as part of the rebuilt village group, which includes numbers 15-29 on the odd side of the street.
