Description

The North Lodges and Entrance Gates to Westonbirt School, along with the flanking quadrant walls and railings, were built in 1853, likely designed by Lewis Vulliamy for Robert Stayner Holford. They are located within a semi-circular grassed area set back from the road. The entrance features elaborate cast iron carriage gates positioned between square stone piers that have moulded cornices and ornamental vases. On either side of the gates are pedestrian gates set in ashlar arches, topped with pierced balustrades.

The two lodges flanking the entrance are nearly identical and designed in the Elizabethan style, echoing the architectural details of Westonbirt House. Each lodge has small square two-storey towers with rusticated angle pilasters, a decorative plat band above, and a ground floor featuring a round-headed single light at the front. The upper storey displays an ornamental date or initial plaque on three sides, along with a cornice that has a pierced parapet and ball finials, topped with small ogee domes.

Inside, the lodges have an open arcaded base that extends back for two additional bays alongside a single-storey section, which features a Flemish gable at both the front and back, and a canted oriel window at the front. The rear has a stepped three-light stone mullion and transom with a square hoodmould. Outside, there is a round-headed single light with a raised semi-circular parapet, followed by a small linking wall and a single small rectangular light with a small room behind it.

The quadrant walls are constructed of ashlar in three bays, featuring square piers with low domed caps. The corners of the walls are set inside, and along the main roadside wall, there are two taller rusticated piers with a strapwork gable between them, topped with a spiked ball finial on the inner pier. The railings form complementary quadrants, made from twisted iron posts with spiked ball finials and decorative bases, with a spiked chain hung between them.
