Description
The Bartons is a large detached house located on Church Street in Tetbury. It dates from the early 18th century, with an additional wing built in 1776. The building is constructed of coursed and dressed rubble stone, featuring quoins and a Cotswold stone slate roof with large ashlar stacks. The main facade faces south and includes a parapet wall and a mansard roof, rising to two storeys and an attic. It has five windows, which are 12-pane sashes with large lintels and dropped keystones. The ground floor features four plate glass sashes in similar surrounds, along with a central Doric porch that has attached columns, a frieze, a cornice, a pediment, and a half-glazed door. There are also four small dormers with flat roofs and a string band at the cornice level.
To the right, there is a small two-storey wing. The front facing Church Street has two storeys, with a central stone doorcase that includes a pediment, a moulded architrave, and a panelled door, all beneath a relieving arch. This is adjacent to the 1776 wing, which features a moulded stone cornice, dentils, a blocking course, and a fluted frieze inscribed with "JW 1776." Additionally, there is a fine stone gateway with panelled side piers and a lintel, corner rosettes, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course.
