Description
Number 18, formerly the Abbey lodge and now a house, dates from the early 19th century, with possible origins in the 17th century, and an addition made in 1912. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone and features a stone slate roof, with two hexagonal rendered stacks located just below the ridge on the left side.
The structure is single storey with an attic and has a three-window range. The ground floor includes two 2-light and one 3-light early 19th-century chamfered stone-mullion windows, while the gable above has a similar 3-light window. The door, located to the center left, has applied mouldings that create three vertical panels within a chamfered stone surround topped with a Tudor-arched head. Additional architectural details include a shallow plinth, a moulded string course over the ground floor and above the window in the gable, and flush quoins at the left angle.
The elevation facing Dollar Street features a 6/6-pane horned sash window in a plain reveal on the ground floor, with a similar window in the gable above. This elevation was part of the 1912 extension, which expanded the lodge from the left of the gable towards Dollar Street.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to have been altered in 1912. To the right of the facade, a short section of attached wall includes a blind doorway in a similar surround, while another short section at a right angle to the facade has a 4-panel door resembling the lodge door, set in a plain reveal with a chamfered Tudor-arched head formed in render. The wall and attached gate pier to the right stand approximately 2.5 meters high and feature deep weathered coping, similar to the Abbey Wall on Gosditch Street.
