Description
Northleach Hospital is a disused union workhouse, later used as a hospital, built in 1836 by Geo. Wick & Son of Witney. Constructed from Cotswold stone ashlar and rubble with Welsh slate roofs, it features a standard cruciform plan with crosswings at the ends of each wing and a central tower. The building has an administration block and guardian's house facing the road, with the wards located behind. It is mostly two storeys tall, with some parts rising to three storeys, and the roofs are hipped over each section.
The street elevation has a plain classical design with ten bays arranged in a 3:4:3 pattern, where the central section is slightly set forward and topped with a pediment. There is a first-floor band, and the central entrance features a six-panel door with a bracketed hood. All windows are twelve-pane sashes, and the eaves gutter is supported on paired brackets, leading to a low-pitched roof with two stone stacks.
The rear wings are made of squared coursed rubble and contain some original casement windows with elliptical heads, particularly on the spine, although many have been replaced, including some with steel in altered openings. Various modern additions and fire escapes are present but are not of special interest.
The interiors were originally very plain and have been partly altered. The building retains all its original structures with only superficial alterations.
