Description
The chapel, located 10 meters west of Northleach Hospital, is a disused building that was constructed around 1836, coinciding with the establishment of the Union Workhouse, which is now the hospital. It is made of roughly coursed limestone rubble and features a slate roof for the main body and a stone slate roof for the apse. The chapel has a rectangular plan with diagonal buttresses at the corners and a small apse at the north gable end.
The south gable end showcases a 19th-century plank door with decorative strap hinges, set within a moulded pointed surround and a hood that has large carved heads as stops. A stepped roll-moulded string runs along the building. The gable features a cinquefoil within a moulded circular surround, topped with a scroll-moulded hood and foliate stops. The base of a former stone bell-hanging is adorned with a carved king's head at the apex, although the upper part is now in pieces at the rear of the church.
The side walls are illuminated by three tall lancet windows with double-chamfered surrounds and a continuous moulded string. The apse is lit by two lancets that have pointed hoods and foliate stops. Inside, the chapel has a three-bay nave with an arch-braced roof supported by stone corbels. The apse windows contain 19th-century stained glass. The interior also features a two-bay chancel with an arched roof truss that has a 'king post' type arrangement at the apex. The flooring consists of 20th-century kitchen tiles, and there are 19th-century pews with fleur-de-lys finials, three painted icons, a statue of Christ, and a 19th-century wooden altar.
