Description

Cromwell House is a detached house dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with 20th-century lean-to extensions. It is constructed of limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins, and has a stone slate roof with ashlar stacks. The house has a long rectangular plan with a cross-gabled west end set at a higher level than the rest of the building. There are two storeys and an attic. The north (entrance) front has a forward-facing gable on the far right. It features single-light, 2-light, and 3-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned casements, with one 2-light flat-chamfered casement, and a 20th-century entrance porch that is a combined lean-to and projecting gabled porch, positioned off-centre to the right and containing a 20th-century studded plank door. The left gable end, which faces the road, contains a 20th-century three-light flat-chamfered stone-mullioned casement on the ground floor, and two 2-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned casements to the first floor and attic. The south front has a gable on the far left, and the rear elevation has a similar fenestration to the entrance front. Two slate-hung roof dormers are visible in the attic. There are axial and lateral stacks with moulded cappings. The interior has not been inspected. The group value context is that it is a well-preserved example of a vernacular building from the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
