Description

Box Tree Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the mid-to-late 17th century, with a likely early-to-mid 18th century extension. It is constructed of limestone rubble with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. The building has a rectangular plan, comprising an original 17th-century range (probably originally a one or two-room ground floor plan) and an 18th-century extension set at a right angle with a gable facing the road. 20th-century extensions are not of particular architectural interest.

The 17th-and 18th-century ranges are 1 1/2 storeys with an attic. The south-west gable end of the original 17th-century section has a single three-light, double-chamfered stone mullioned casement window on the ground floor, and a similar window above. An attic window with diamond leaded panes is also present. Access is via a 20th-century part-glazed door on a lean-to at the north-west gable end. The gable end of the 18th-century extension has two two-light wooden casement windows on the ground floor, one within a blocked doorway, and a single-light casement with dressed stone jambs in the attic. A chimney gable and a stack are on the right-hand return and on the 17th-century range, respectively. The interior was not inspected.
