Description
The Old Royal Oak, Hainault and Bankside Cottages is an unusual building that features late 18th century to early 19th century remodelling of earlier 17th century structures. It stands two and a half storeys tall and is constructed of ashlar stone with a band above the ground floor and a moulded eaves cornice. The front has a modern tile roof and modern brick chimneys set on ashlar bases. There are three modern gabled dormers.
The first floor has a window arrangement of 2:2:3, featuring hollow chamfered mullions and surrounds, with most windows being three-light, except for a two-light window near the doorway of The Old Royal Oak. Both Bankside Cottage and Hainault have angled bays on the ground floor next to the right-hand windows. The windows predominantly consist of glazing bar casements.
The Old Royal Oak has a moulded doorcase, Hainault features a raised surround, and Bankside has a plain edge beaded surround. There is also an arched doorway with a single fanlight to the left, which leads through a passage alley to the rear of Bankside, providing access to The Granary and The Silk Mill.
