Description

Linden End is a detached house, originally part of a school, with a core dating to the early 18th century. It was extended to the south in the later 18th century and to the north in the late 19th or early 20th century. The original sections are of rubble stone, likely originally faced with roughcast or render, and feature alternating chamfered quoins. The front has a slate roof with a moulded stone eaves cornice in the centre and a coped verge to the left; the rear has artificial slate. Originally, there were stone end stacks to the central range, with offset and moulded cornices, and an external stone stack to the left side range. A later 19th-century wing is rendered on a plinth, with a tile roof. The building forms a T-shape with the main ranges and a later cross range to the north, connected by a small linking corner wing at the rear.

The main range has four windows – 12-pane sashes with additional margin glazing, set in slightly raised, beaded stone surrounds with bullnose sills. A plat band runs below the windows and at plinth level, interrupted by two canted bays contemporary with the cross wing, which have tile roofs and full-length plain-glazed windows. The side range to the left contains plain 12-pane sashes in plain stone surrounds on each floor, and a blocked doorway with a timber lintel to the right. The cross wing has a large 2-storey canted bay with a 1/3/1-light stone mullion and transoms on each floor. On the north side is a large, re-used segmental-arched stone doorcase with a keystone, leading to a 6-panel door with four bolection-moulded panels and two flush panels, a plain fanlight, and formerly glazed side lights.
