Description

The former stables at Westonbirt House, now used as classrooms, were built between 1863 and 1870, with a rear enlargement in the 1930s and internal alterations. The building is constructed from coursed and dressed stone and features a stone slate roof with scattered single polygonal flues. The north range has a symmetrical design with two storeys, highlighted by a large central gable that includes a four-centred moulded archway leading to the courtyard. On either side of the gable are two full dormers with decorative barge boards, and the projecting end gables are coped with finials and have pierced quatrefoils at their apexes. The windows on the first floor generally consist of two or three-light stone mullions with plain casements, while the ground floor features stone mullion and transom windows with square hoodmoulds and glazing bar casements. The rear includes large chamfered Tudor arches, which have been infilled. Although the building has been altered for use as part of the school facilities for Westonbirt House, it retains most of its original external features on the prominent northern elevation.
