Description
Lilac Cottage and Spinners Cottage, formerly part of a row attached to Arlington Mill, are early to mid-17th century buildings, with 20th-century alterations and an extension. They are now two separate houses. The construction is of random rubble limestone, with ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof.
The south front of Spinners Cottage features a full gable with casement windows. There is a restored three-light window on the ground floor, a restored three-light recessed cavetto moulded window above, and a two-light window in the attic, all with hoodmoulds. A gabled porch has been added to the left, with a restored two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement above, also with a flat hoodmould. A through passage provides access to the north side, with 20th-century concrete lintels. A gabled attic dormer is positioned above the passage. Two ridge chimneys have moulded caps. Lilac Cottage to the right has 20th-century artificial stone mullioned casements.
The rear elevation has scattered fenestration with timber casements, some with leading, to Lilac Cottage. Spinners Cottage has restored mullioned casements. The interior was not inspected. The cottages have undergone extensive restoration in the mid to late 20th century, but they retain picturesque group value alongside The Ponderosa, Court Cottage, and Weaver's Cottage, which adjoin them at the west end.
