Description
Coln Cottage and The Village Stores is a former house that has been converted into a shop, along with two attached houses. The building dates from the late 16th century, with the shop section from the mid 17th century, while Coln Cottage is likely from the 18th century. The late 19th century saw the addition of shop fronts. The structure is made of random rubble limestone, with brick chimneys that have been rebuilt, and a stone slate roof.
The two-storey house features two half gables and has a two-window arrangement. The ground floor includes a three-light recessed cavetto mullioned casement on the left, a 20th-century casement with a timber lintel on the right, and a small stair window with a hoodmould beyond. On the upper floor, there are two 2-light casements with hoodmoulds. The central doorway is recessed and has a 20th-century door. Coln Cottage has iron casements with timber lintels and two ridge-mounted chimneys.
To the left, a parallel-roofed mid-17th century block projects forward, featuring two 2-light recessed cavetto mullioned casements on the northeast-facing gable end, both with hoodmoulds. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front, and there are two 19th-century upper floor casements beneath a moulded fascia. Another 19th-century shop front is located to the left. The rear includes a gabled wing with 2-light casements on both the ground and upper floors, along with a small opening in the gable apex. Coln Cottage has a lateral chimney.
Inside, the building retains relatively un-restored plank shutters on the front casement. Although the spiral staircase has been removed, the doorways and shaft remain. The roof was likely rebuilt in the 19th or 20th century.
