Description
Arlington Lodge is a large detached house, originally dating back to around 1700, with additions made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone, with ashlar and brick rebuilt chimneys, and a stone slate roof. The main part of the house is two storeys with an attic and a cellar to the northwest range. A parallel range was added to the garden side, with a further projecting addition to the east end.
The original northwest front was designed for a five-window frontage, featuring cross windows. An ashlar band is set flush into the masonry at transom level. A plain projecting upper floor band is also present. The former central doorway has been replaced with a cross window. There are three hipped roof dormers, and two chimneys, one to each original gable end. The front was extended to the left by one window, mirroring the existing fenestration, with a further gable end chimney and a doorway inserted at the junction with the earlier range. An adjoining former barn to the left is not of special architectural interest.
The southeast side features varied window placement on the parallel range, including a bipartite sash window to the ground floor and two upper floor 12-pane sashes with flat stone arches. A projecting cross-gabled addition to the right has a two-storey canted bay with mullioned and transomed casements and a hipped roof. The interior appears to have been extensively altered in the early 19th century; some front casements retain panelled shutters.
