Description
This barn, located about 10 meters west of Hurst Farmhouse, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins and features a stone slate roof. The barn has a rectangular plan with central projecting porches on both the north and south sides. There are lean-to extensions on either side of the south porch, which have roof slopes that sweep down. A 20th-century lean-to extension on the north side is not of special interest.
The north porch has a double doorway that is now blocked with concrete blocks, and a 20th-century plate glass window has been installed. The opposite wall of the porch features 20th-century double doors made of chipboard. There is a blocked single doorway to the right of the porch with a 20th-century two-light casement window inserted in the blocking, and a single doorway to the left of the porch. The right gable end has a blocked single-width doorway with a two-light casement inserted, and there is a partially blocked pitching door above it. The left lean-to gable end has a single-width doorway with a segmental head, while the opposite gable end features a blocked pitching window. The barn includes ventilation slits and oval holes in the gable ends. The roof of the south porch is hipped, with flat coping at the gable ends and ball finials.
Inside, the barn has six bays and retains original collar and tie beam roof trusses with triple through purlins. The archways over the double-width openings to each porch have segmental heads. Within the roof space of the hipped porch, there is a granary with partially plastered walls. Notably, there is graffiti on a dressed stone quoin that reads 'JOHN HARWARD --B-B 1771/72', located where the north porch breaks forward.
