Description
Two Tovey monuments and seven unidentified monuments are located about 3 to 10 metres south of the southeast aisle buttress in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. The group includes three chest tombs: Richard Tovey from 1820, Richard Tovey from 1770, and Henry from 1804, along with six unidentified headstones to the west, likely from the mid to late 18th century. The tombs are made of limestone. The Tovey monuments both feature stepped tent tops with curved sections and roll moulding, as well as moulded plinths and capping on their bases. The northern tomb (1820) has plain incised ends and sides, a panelled frieze, and pilaster side strips. The southern tomb (1770) has a plain frieze, recessed ends, and slightly fielded sides with flanking reeded strips. Both tombs show some deterioration on the north side at the top. The plain unidentified chest tomb has a flat top, slab sides, and ends on a chamfered plinth. All headstones feature high relief cartouches with cherub heads, with two displaying twin cherubs. Two of the headstones have additional stones at the rear, which appear to be footstones.
