Description
The Josiah Dyer monument is a chest tomb located approximately 17 meters east of the north aisle in the churchyard of the Church of St. Oswald in Compton Abdale Village. It commemorates Josiah Dyer, who died in 1794, his wife Hester, who died in 1832, and their son Josiah, who died in 1795. The monument features inscription plaques and a plinth made of red sandstone, while the rest is constructed from grey sandstone. The moulded plinth supports a raised inscription plaque for Josiah Dyer, which has a moulded margin, quadrant corners, and rosettes on the north side. On the south side, there is a sunken fielded inscription panel for Hester Dyer, adorned with a segmental head and roundels. The west end displays an eroded inscription with a stylized swag above it, and a similar inscription plaque at the east end also features a stylized swag. The tomb is capped with a moulded margin.
