Description
Compton Abdale War Memorial is a First World War memorial built after 1919, made from Cotswold stone. It is situated on the embankment next to the path leading to the Grade II-listed Church of St Oswald. Nearby, there are two Grade II and one Grade II-listed monuments within the churchyard, as well as several other Grade II-listed buildings and structures in the village.
The memorial features a wheel-headed cross on a tapering shaft. At the intersection of the cross-head, there is a small Latin cross carved in low relief. The cross shaft rises from a chamfered plinth, which is square in plan, and stands on a three-stepped base.
On the north face of the plinth, there is an incised inscription that reads: ERECTED TO THE / MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH WHO / FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918, followed by the names of six fallen soldiers and the phrase THEIR NAME WILL LIVE FOR EVERMORE. The east and west faces of the memorial state: THE FOLLOWING / MEN SERVED IN THE / GREAT WAR, followed by the names of those who served and returned.
