Description

This listing describes fourteen monuments located about 9 to 18 meters southeast of the southeast porch buttress in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary in Fairford. Among these are five chest tombs and nine headstones.

The chest tombs include an unidentified tomb from the early 18th century to the north, and the tomb of Rose from 1786 to the southwest, with three additional tombs included for their group value: Dawkins from 1823, Townsend from 1842, and Rose from 1857. The tombs are made of limestone. The unidentified tomb features a large splayed plinth and capping, with plain slab sides and ends, and small recessed rectangles on each side towards the west. The Rose tomb (1786) has a stepped tent top with a curved section, a moulded plinth and capping on a tall double base, a panelled frieze, and fielded sides and ends, with flanking reeded pilasters. The tops of the panels are badly eroded.

The nine headstones are arranged in a row to the south, starting east of the Rose tomb from 1857, and are mostly from the late 18th century. Six of these headstones feature high relief cartouches and cherubs' heads, with plain stones at the ends and center. The northernmost headstone is dated 1775.
