Description

Nine monuments, including those for William Carter and Ann Telling, are located about 17 meters south of the southeast porch buttress in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. The group includes two chest tombs: William Carter, who died in 1794, is to the north, and Ann Telling (or Tilling), who died in 1803, is to the south. There is also a row of seven headstones, likely belonging to the Carter family, extending from the west end of Carter's tomb to beyond the east end of Telling's tomb.

The monuments are made of limestone. Carter's tomb features a stepped tent top with a curved top section, a moulded plinth and capping on a tall base, a plain frieze, plain recessed ends with fluted returns, and plain recessed sides with narrow flanking relief strips. Telling's tomb has a tent top with moulded capping on its base and an unusual design that includes four Egyptian caryatids at the corners, along with slightly fielded end and side panels. Six of the headstones display high relief cartouches with cherub heads and wings, dating from the mid to late 18th century. The southernmost headstone is smaller and plain, featuring the initials LC and the date 1797.
