Description

High Gables and The Old Bakery comprise two dwellings with an attached former bakery. The main structure dates from the early to mid-17th century, with the bakery section built in 1803. The building is constructed from random rubble limestone, with some ashlar and yellow brick rebuilt chimneys, and has a stone slate roof.

The building is two storeys with an attic. The front features two gables. High Gables, on the left, has a two-window front, with three-light windows to the ground and upper floors, and two-light windows in the attic. The windows have hoodmoulds and recessed chamfered mullioned casements, which may be replacements. The Old Bakery, to the right, has a similar two-window front, with recessed cavetto mullioned casements. A central doorway with a timber lintel and plank door serves High Gables. A similar doorway to The Old Bakery has a lean-to porch set into an angle with the bakery wing to the right. The main roof eaves of High Gables have been raised.

The bakery wing was converted from a barn, likely in the late 19th century. The original barn doorways have been blocked, with timber lintels remaining. A large inserted casement window is visible on the south-west side, and there is a chimney gable with a rebuilt stack to the left of this window. Another inserted casement and doorway is in the front gable end of the bakery, with a datestone 'W.T. 1803' set in the gable apex. The rear of the property has a tall lateral ashlar chimney to the rear of The Old Bakery, along with an attached single-storey outbuilding range. Two gables are visible to the right, and the rear of High Gables has been somewhat restored.

The interior was not inspected, but it is reported that 19th-century ovens remain in the former bakery.
