Description

The Baptist Chapel and attached school house is a non-conformist chapel dated 1850, although it appears to be older. It features a pre-archaeological Gothick style, constructed from coursed rubble with a low-pitched slate roof and coped verges. The sides of the chapel have two-light Y-tracery lancets, while the front (west) gable includes two projecting gabled stair turrets and a lower lean-to section with an arched doorway. The ground slopes sharply to the south, allowing for a basement. The building extends eastward as a school house, also made of coursed and squared rubble, with two storeys and two windows. The openings are plain with slightly chamfered edges and timber mullion windows. There is a central panel that is uninscribed. The interior is likely arranged as it was around 1850, with two Tudor arched doorways at the west end that are blocked, and there are blocked openings for school children or a choir above the east doorways. The structure was probably originally a plain 18th-century rectangular building, which was extended to its current form in 1850. It holds an important position when viewed from Dale Street and the south.
