Description
Russell Spring and Raised Walkway is a mid-19th century structure located on the north-west side of High Street in Blockley. It features a drystone rubble retaining wall with a soldier course at the parapet and a plain string at path level. The wall follows the line of the road, starting at Arlington Terrace and extending approximately 25 yards short of Rock Bank, reaching a height of about 11 feet above Russell Spring.
Russell Spring itself is situated nearly opposite the entrance to Malvern House and consists of a simple gabled aedicule that contains a niche with a water spout. The tympanum above the niche is inscribed with the words "Water from the Living Rock God's Precious Gift to Man," and the niche is labeled "Russell Spring." This structure was built using unemployed labor during the winter under the supervision of Richard Belcher, the Parish Waywarden.
The spring is named after Lucy Russell, who worked at the nearby mill from around 1800 to 1820 and passed away in 1858.
