Description
Rock Cottage is an unusual villa dating from the early 19th century, which has undergone alterations. It is three storeys high with a gable-lit attic. The exterior is of coursed rubble construction with a concrete slate roof and coped verges. The ground floor is now a basement with a vaulted terrace leading to the first floor (which is the present ground floor) in front. There are three windows with triangular heads, featuring modern casements and shutters. These windows have been extended to create French windows on the present ground floor, and a central gabled porch is present. A triangular-headed doorway is located within the central arch below the terrace. The cottage’s connection to Joanna Southcott, “The Prophetess,” who lived here from 1804 to 1874, is significant, especially considering the nearby chapel (now a cottage) located on the opposite side of the road.
