Description

The Old House is a large town house located on Long Street in Tetbury, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with a street front added in the mid-18th century. The main facade is made of ashlar stone and features rusticated quoin strips, a stone modillion cornice, and a blocking course. It has a Cotswold stone slate roof with a large rebuilt stone stack on the left side. The rear of the building is rendered and includes additional large ashlar stacks, some of which have twin flues and moulded cornices.

The structure consists of two ranges connected by a lower linking unit, with the front range originally gabled and aligned with No. 42 Long Street. The street facade is three storeys high and has five windows, which are 12-pane sashes with keystones, and two 9-pane windows on the second floor. The ground floor features four similar windows and a central Ionic portico set on a large stone step, supported by two columns and two pilasters. The portico has an ovolo frieze, a cornice, and a pediment decorated with dentils. The entrance includes a six-panel door with fielded panels and glazed top sections. Above the door are two stone panels with decoration resembling a single enlarged dog tooth panel.

The rear range has two storeys and an attic, featuring two gables and stone mullion windows with square hoodmoulds, along with a late 19th-century addition on the left. Inside the older range, there is an original stone flag floor, exposed beams, and fireplaces, including a very large stone cheeked fireplace (now with a replaced timber lintel) that has a domed brick bread oven in one corner, with a small pointed stone arch supporting the hinge post for the door. The front range boasts a fine Georgian interior, complete with panelling and plaster ceilings, as well as a framed staircase.
