Description

Dale House is a building dating from around 1700, which includes a service wing and a 17th-century cottage. The older part of the house is partially obscured from the road by a mid-19th-century extension. The structure features coursed rubble, squared in the later sections, and has Cotswold stone roofs with weathered coping on the newer parts. There are three chimneys, two of which are made of ashlar. The house is two storeys tall with attics.

The front of the house is divided into two sections. The right side, which is the older part, has a band over the ground floor and a range of mullioned windows: two-light windows on the first floor and a three-light window with a drip on the ground floor. There is also a gabled dormer with old metal casements, and the chimney has a moulded capping. The left side, which is the mid-19th-century extension, is L-shaped and features a gabled porch at the angle. It has one-over-one windows, glazing bar sashes with flat raised surrounds, and a flush panelled door. There is a two-window return to the east with a cast iron porch, and a single-storey out-house to the right.

The best view of the original 1700 house is from the garden on the south side. It has two gabled dormers with old leaded casements, two mullion and transom windows, and a tall stair window with two transoms, which is a local vernacular feature. The east side has segment-headed cellar windows with single mullions. Inside, there is an original staircase from around 1700 with turned balusters and a slightly later panelled string. The 17th-century wing features a plain collar-truss roof structure and there is a vaulted cellar.
