Description
Two adjoining barns at Church Farm consist of a large barn, likely from the late medieval period, and a smaller barn to the west, dating from the late 18th century. The barns are constructed of rubble stone with quoins and feature a stone slate roof with a coped verge and saddle stone at the east end.
The large barn has a very wide gabled cart entry that projects to the left, featuring a tile-hung gable, a renewed timber lintel, and doors, along with raking buttresses on each side. There are inserted square openings to the right and a large opposed gabled entry that has been walled up on the inside. The east gable end displays a long slit vent with a splayed inner reveal and a dripmould running across the gable halfway down the vent. The barn has five bays, with the inner side of the end bay constructed as an aisle, featuring arcade posts and struts to tie beams and the arcade plate, along with wind bracing between the arcade and wall plates. The east side of the opposed entries also includes a pair of base crucks on stone plinths, which are partially obscured by the walling up of the north entry. The interior has been plastered and has an earth floor, with some replaced rafters and upper purlins.
The smaller barn to the west features a nearly central gabled projecting cart entry with a boarded gable, a timber lintel, and double doors, as well as a similar opposed gabled entry. It has slit vents on each side, a pitch hole, and another slit vent to the west. This barn consists of four bays with king post trusses.
