Description

Preston Mill is a late 17th/early 18th century millhouse with a late 18th/early 19th century mill, situated beside the River Churn. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble stone with stone slate roofs, and have brick stacks to each left end, the millhouse stack being semi-external with a stone base. The millhouse is two storeys and an attic, with later extensions to the rear. The front of the millhouse has three windows with 2-light stone mullions and transoms. The ground floor features two 3-light chamfered stone mullions with flat stone voussoir heads above stone frames. All windows have iron casements. A stone doorcase with a flat stone voussoir head and a fanlight of two square lights is centrally positioned, leading to a vertical battened door, likely of the late 19th century. Three small gabled dormers, each with twin leaded casements, are set into the roof. A single stone mullion and transom window is present on the rear elevation. The mill is two storeys high, with a high area of blind wall above the first-floor windows. It has three windows with twin wooden casements with cambered stone heads. A similar window is found on the ground floor to the right, and two doors are positioned to the left. Similar windows are present on the first floor of the rear elevation. A smaller wing with a concrete tile roof extends to the east. The waters of the River Churn run below the mill.
