Description
The Old Forge is a large detached house located on the north side of Poulton London Road. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and was restored in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone, partly covered in roughcast, and features a stone slate roof. There are four stone stacks on the main block, with two on the left having brick flues and two on the right featuring ashlar flues and a moulded cornice.
The house has an 'L' shape, with a forward projecting wing to the left, which was likely the original forge and now includes a garage in the gable end. It is two storeys high with an attic. The main block has four windows on both floors, featuring 2-light casements, some of which have latticed leading. There is a nearly central early 20th-century gabled projecting porch. The roof includes two small hipped dormers with paired latticed casements. The projecting wing has a brick ridge stack and two hipped dormers on the eaves, also with latticed casements, along with a doorway that has quoins and a timber lintel.
