Description

The Poulton war memorial is a limestone structure erected in the years following the First World War, commemorating those who died in service. It consists of a square platform, approximately 2 metres across, with a three-stepped base supporting a tapering, chamfered column carved as a wheel cross in deep relief. The column has broach stops at its junction with the square base. The base bears the inscription "THIS CROSS / WAS ERECTED BY / THE PEOPLE OF POULTON / IN MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919", flanked by the names of the fourteen individuals who died in the conflict. A plaque inscribed with names of those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945) has been placed on the top step of the platform.
