Description
The Old House is a detached house located in Hampnett, with origins in the 17th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, featuring large dressed stone quoins, a stone slate roof, and ashlar stacks. The main body of the house has a 'T'-shaped plan, with a 19th-century extension at the gable end facing the churchyard.
The 17th-century range is two storeys high, with two blocked three-light stone-mullioned casements on the first floor, positioned on either side of two three-light wooden casements that have segmental-headed surrounds. The ground floor includes three two-light casements, also with segmental-headed surrounds. A 19th-century plank door is located on the far left, and there is a stable-type door on the gable end facing the road, which features a three-pane light above it, all within the same segmental-headed surround.
A wing extends at right angles to the main body and faces the road, lit by a 20th-century three-light casement with a timber lintel. The ground floor has double plank garage doors within a segmental-headed surround. The 19th-century extension has a lower roof level at the gable end, with a half dormer featuring a 20th-century three-light casement on the first floor. The ground floor includes a stable-type door flanked by two small four-pane lights, with a single segmental head over the door and flanking windows. The gable end features stepped coping and stacks.
Inside, the range at right angles to the road consists of five bays with four upper cruck trusses that rise to a yolk, supported by a braced 'V' shaped collar. The double purlins retain some curved windbracing, showcasing an unusual roof form with distinctive details for a building likely dating from the 17th century.
