Description

Moor Wood is a large country house built in the mid to late 18th century, with extensions added around 1820 and 1920. The original structure is pebbledashed, while the later extensions are made of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. The main building is rectangular and two storeys high, featuring early 19th-century extensions that project slightly at each gable end.

The front facade has a 2:3:1 window arrangement, with the 18th-century section in the center. On the ground floor, there is a single 12-pane sash window with a plain architrave and keystone on the left, and a large C20 tripartite sash window with a matching stone surround on the right. The first floor has nine-pane sashes with similar surrounds. The entrance, located at the lower right, features an early 19th-century door with six beaded panels set within a rusticated surround, flanked by engaged Ionic columns and topped with a pulvinated frieze and a hall light with circular glazing bars.

The right-hand side of the building has a symmetrical five-window facade, also lit by 12-pane sashes with slatted shutters, and is adorned with a moulded cornice and parapet that returns at the ends. The central entrance on this side features an early 19th-century door with six beaded panels and a fanlight, flanked by engaged Doric columns supporting an open pediment. The two-storey C20 extension includes 12 and 9-pane sashes with plain dressed stone architraves. The roof of the main body is hipped, with gable-end, axial, and lateral stacks.

Historically, Moor Wood, formerly known as The Moor, was home to notable individuals such as Eycott, Agg, Small, Haines, Longworth, and Robinson. The interior of the house is not accessible for viewing.
