Description
This listing describes a group of six monuments located in the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew, situated 4 to 9 meters south of the south porch. The group includes two chest tombs and four headstones, all made of limestone.
The first chest tomb is dedicated to John Tufley and is likely from the late 18th century. It features an inscription on the south side with a raised margin and fielded inscription panels at either end. The flat-chamfered capping appears to have been turned over at some point, leaving the chamfers facing upwards.
The row of four headstones, located approximately 4.5 meters northwest of the chest tomb, dates from the late 17th to early 18th century. None of the inscriptions are legible. Each headstone has a double scrollwork top. The two headstones on the left feature winged cherub's heads at the top, along with fruit and hourglass motifs on either side of the inscription panel. The other two headstones also display cherub's heads, flanked by fruit and flowers, with swags and hourglass motifs beside the inscription panels.
The second chest tomb is dedicated to William Joachim and other family members, located about 3 meters west of the row of headstones. William Joachim died in 1841, his wife Ann passed away in 1867, and Thomas Joachim died in 1878. This chest tomb has a moulded plinth, lyre-shaped ends adorned with foliate scrollwork, and oval inscription panels topped with cherubs' heads. It also features a rectangular inscription plaque with raised margins on the north and south sides, swags on the marginal panels, and skulls at the base of each swag on the north side. The deep capping stone has a moulded margin.
